Reading Round Up – Here are short recommendations for books I’ve recently enjoyed. Some I read with the kids – some were just for me – and some were for a reading group.

Comedy

in America by Maeve Higgins

Maeve Higgins is completely hysterical. Her delightful memoir made me laugh out loud in multiple doctor’s waiting rooms. Tune into the NPR show “Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me” to hear her voice and then, if you need something light and fun, pick up her book today. Thanks to my sister for a great gift.

Classic

This classic was a re-read for me in 2021. I enjoyed the book after high school. This time, 22 years later, it was much harder to read emotionally. I basically just wanted to hug Holden and have him over for a nice family dinner. Highly recommend but please know that life is not as hopeless as it seems.

Kids

The Laura Ingalls Wilder books have been special to our homeschool. We finally finished the series with The First Four Years. Spoilers: I’m glad we read this book, but some parts were unsettling and upsetting…because that’s how live is. Worth the read to see the perseverance of the American farmer. (But start with Little House in the Big Woods or Farmer Boy!)

Non-Fiction, Life-Changing

This book absolutely changed my life. It was the most convicting book I have read in some time. I literally buy an extra copy when I need free shipping so I can give copies away. Someday, I’ll write a more thorough review.

Some reviews will say this book is legalistic and the ideals are unachievable – but remember that the book is full of grace. That grace extends to the reader as well. Find a way to open your home and life to your community. Reach your neighbors for Christ. Read this book.
